Can you get life insurance after cancer?

Yes. A great many cancer survivors buy fully underwritten cover, and some reach standard rates. What decides it is the type, the stage at diagnosis, and how long since treatment ended.

A cancer history is one of the most misunderstood things in underwriting, largely because people extrapolate from the worst case.

Three facts do most of the work

Type. Cancers are not underwritten as one category. Basal cell skin cancer barely registers. Early-stage breast, prostate and thyroid cancers have strong survival data and are widely written. Pancreatic and small cell lung cancers are assessed far more cautiously.

Stage at diagnosis. This dominates. Localised disease and distant disease are effectively different conditions in a manual, and the survival separation behind that is genuinely large.

Time since treatment ended. Recurrence risk is front-loaded, so the file improves as the clock runs — sharply at first, then gradually.

The date that matters

Carriers count from the date active treatment ended: surgery, chemotherapy, radiation. Ongoing maintenance medication does not stop that clock. Applicants routinely give the wrong date and land in a worse band than their history warrants.

Where to start

Your pathology report. Type, stage and grade as recorded at diagnosis are what the application turns on, and no amount of shopping around substitutes for knowing them. The full treatment is on our cancer history page.

This is research, not advice. No Exam Life Insurance Online is an independent publisher, not a carrier or agency, and sells nothing. Underwriting outcomes vary by carrier, by state and by individual file, and carriers revise their guides without notice. Confirm anything that affects a decision with an agent licensed in your state before you apply.
