How long after a stroke can you get life insurance?

Traditional cover generally needs a postpone period after the event, commonly reported as around twelve months for a completed stroke and less for a TIA. The better rate classes are usually reserved for applicants several years clear.

Time is the single largest variable in a post-stroke application, and it is the one you cannot argue with.

Why carriers wait

Recurrence risk after a cerebrovascular event is concentrated in the months immediately following it. The postpone period exists to let that period pass before the carrier commits to a price. It is not a penalty and it is not negotiable.

Practitioners report roughly twelve months for a completed stroke, a shorter window for a transient ischaemic attack, and the better classes reserved for applicants a good many years out. Carrier manuals are not public, so treat those as practitioner-reported ranges rather than published rules.

What to do during the wait

Not apply. Assemble. The imaging report confirming the stroke type, a current clinical note describing your functional status, and evidence that the underlying cause is controlled: recent blood pressure readings, an INR history if you are anticoagulated, a recent lipid panel.

Documented recovery over that period is exactly what improves the file, so the interval is not wasted time.

If you need cover now

Guaranteed issue asks nothing and issues quickly. Use it as a bridge, then apply properly once the window closes. The full walkthrough is in our guide to the six questions every carrier asks after a stroke.

This is research, not advice. No Exam Life Insurance Online is an independent publisher, not a carrier or agency, and sells nothing. Underwriting outcomes vary by carrier, by state and by individual file, and carriers revise their guides without notice. Confirm anything that affects a decision with an agent licensed in your state before you apply.
