Does high blood pressure affect life insurance?

It can, though treated and controlled hypertension is one of the most routinely accepted conditions in underwriting. Many carriers will still offer their better rate classes where readings are well controlled on medication.

Hypertension is so common in applicant populations that carriers have built detailed, well-worn guidance for it. That works in your favour.

Controlled beats untreated

The pattern that runs through the whole of underwriting applies here with unusual clarity. A diagnosed hypertensive with consistent readings in a healthy range on medication is frequently eligible for preferred classes at carriers that allow it. An undiagnosed applicant whose exam reading comes back elevated is a worse file, because nothing about it is documented or managed.

Being on a blood pressure medication is not, on its own, a rating.

What moves it against you

  • Readings that remain elevated despite treatment
  • Multiple medications needed to achieve control, which signals more resistant disease
  • Evidence of end-organ damage — kidney impairment, left ventricular hypertrophy, retinopathy
  • Hypertension alongside raised cholesterol, diabetes or a raised build score, which compound rather than add

Before you apply

Have several recent readings from your physician’s office rather than one. A single high reading on exam day — which happens often enough to have a name — is far easier to contextualise when a documented history shows otherwise.

This is research, not advice. No Exam Life Insurance Online is an independent publisher, not a carrier or agency, and sells nothing. Underwriting outcomes vary by carrier, by state and by individual file, and carriers revise their guides without notice. Confirm anything that affects a decision with an agent licensed in your state before you apply.
