What CD4 count and viral load do insurers want to see?

No carrier publishes thresholds. What is consistently reported is that sustained undetectable viral load and a stable CD4 count in a healthy range, documented over years rather than months, are what the assessment turns on.

This is the question we are asked most on this subject, and the honest answer is less precise than most sites give.

Why there is no published number

Carrier underwriting manuals are proprietary and are not released. Any specific CD4 threshold you find quoted online is broker-reported at best, and it varies between the small number of carriers writing this business. The general constraint is explained on our how underwriting works page.

What is consistent

Viral load. Sustained undetectable is the single most important line on the file. One undetectable reading is not the same as three years of them, and carriers are pricing the pattern.

CD4 count and trajectory. A stable count in a healthy range matters more than any single figure. A count that is recovering steadily reads better than a higher one that fluctuates.

Duration. Longer stable records are better files, which inverts the intuition that a recent diagnosis is somehow easier to insure.

What to assemble

Three years of viral load and CD4 results with dates, your treatment start date, and an uninterrupted pharmacy record. That bundle is the application. Gaps in it are what raise questions, not the numbers themselves.

This is research, not advice. No Exam Life Insurance Online is an independent publisher, not a carrier or agency, and sells nothing. Underwriting outcomes vary by carrier, by state and by individual file, and carriers revise their guides without notice. Confirm anything that affects a decision with an agent licensed in your state before you apply.
